Getting Around

Prague has an excellent public transportation system – metro/subway, streetcars/trams, and buses. It’s probably best to buy a three-day ticket or weekly pass and keep it with you the entire time you’re in town. That way you don’t have to worry about punching your ticket every time you jump on a tram, as you do with single-use tickets, and you’re much less likely to find yourself without a ticket when stopped by a plainclothes inspector. Riding without a ticket is more trouble than the few crowns you might save. A single encounter with one of Prague’s ticket inspectors who randomly board buses, trams, and metros – usually in the center – will convince you of that.

Tickets for all public transportation are available at local Tabak shops – don’t count on there being a ticket box inside the trams or busses. For more details about public transportation, including maps, the location of ticket sellers, and the different tickets available, check out the official Prague Transit website.

Prague is also very walkable and it’s easy enough to get in 10 miles in a single day of wandering through neighborhoods and window shopping. Don’t worry if you get tired, you can always jump on a tram for a couple of stations and get off again – preferably near a nice pub with a garden.

Trams are more convenient for this kind of travel than the underground metro. Buses should be avoided unless you’re out late and just have to get home before dawn – but then you’re too old for that, right?

A word about taxis in Prague. Taxies are inexpensive but use them with care as Prague cabbies have been known to take the long way ‘round to pad the fare. And you don’t want to get in an argument with a burly gentleman who can ring up four or five other cabbies to back him up. If you need a taxi, it’s best to order one from a reputable company. I usually use AAA Taxi, but there are others. Don’t flag down a taxi on the street, especially if you’re in the center. The website MyCzechRepublic.com has more details, including taxi company recommendations and contacts.
